So, I’ve never been a huge fan of Doctor Who Christmas specials. I just generally am not fond of Christmasy things, and like 70% of the Doctor Who Christmas specials were just… really, really bad. I was actually happy to learn that they were doing a New Years special this year instead of a Christmas special. Not only did it mean that there wouldn’t be any annoying Christmas-themed stuff, it was also just a good decision all around, in my opinion. I mean, Christmas is a Christian holiday. Yaz is Muslim, and a lot of the people who watch Doctor Who aren’t Christian. New Years day at least isn’t strictly a religious holiday. Plus, Doctor Who just really needed a change.

And I really loved this episode. It was so much fun! It definitely feels like a proper conclusion to Series 11 when The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos didn’t. It had some excellent comedic moments, some legitimately scary scenes, and some genuinely touching and emotional scenes. I’d give it a 9/10. Spoilery thoughts are below the cut.

So, Daleks. I admit, I was a bit worried when I heard the rumours. Daleks are just so overdone. This episode used them in some new and interesting ways, though. The Dalek possessing people was really creepy and terrifying. Technically, that happened in Moffat’s run too, but it was much better done and more interesting in this episode. The action scenes were really fun, and I liked that the episode didn’t take itself too seriously. It was ridiculous and amazing.

Thirteen was great in this episode. Jodie Whittaker really feels like the Doctor now. My favourite Doctor moments in the episode were the scenes where they talked to the Dalek, especially the first one. It was very satisfying to finally see Angry Thirteen. Also, that scene where they were trying to call UNIT was absolutely hilarious.

My one complaint about this episode is that I wish there was more Yaz. She was definitely the least important character in the episode. But I really enjoyed the focus on Ryan. He had a lot of character development in the beginning of series 11, but a lot less in the second half, so it was nice to see some focus on him in this episode. The scenes with him and his father were really, really well-done. I cried at the end. I also liked all the new characters in this episode. I was honestly really happy that none of them died. I was totally expecting at least one of them to.
